Legendre functions

Hi, you guys at WRI:
The Legendre function algorithm does not work for some values 
of the argument for very high orders. For example, try

Plot[LegendreP[39.5,x],{x,-0.3,0},PlotRange->{-1,1}]

(Mathematica 2.0 on Mac II fx)
Maybe such high orders are rarely needed, but at least, one 
should know the limitations of the method.
