Mouse input on X-windows

I wanted to update the readers of this forum on a question that I
had posed last week regarding mouse input to Mathematica.

I had asked whether there was a way to get the position of the mouse
when it was put inside a 2-D X-windows graphics plot made by Mathematica.

The response that I've gotten has been overwhelming. About fifty of you
are apparently also interested in finding the answer to this question.
Unfortunately, no one appears to have any ideas on how to go about doing
this. My lab has contacted the people at Wolfram and they have told
us that "it would be nice if we had a way to do this, so why don't
you go ahead and do it and let us know." So I gather that it's some
kind of major problem for them.

It seems to me that the issue of mouse I/O is significant enough
to get these people to pay some attention to it.

By the way, MatLab has this feature built in.
