MMA files *.ma & *.mb on the NeXT

Does anyone have a reference as to what use the *.mb files are for the NeXT version of Mathematica? Is there anyway to recover a .ma file from a .mb file? Also, is there anyway to disable the writing of .mb files? Reply directly. I'll post if there is enough interest.
