Alias vs $PreRead

Do others feel that this is a regrettable development in the advance from
v. 1.2 to v. 2.0?  Or am I missing something elegant?  It was very easy
to include a line vln::=VeryLongName in a notebook or in init.m, rather
than the clumsy $PreRead=StringReplace[#,"vln"->"VeryLongName"]&.
