No of open links in MathLink

There seems to be a built in limit of 30 on the number
of links one may concurrently open with LinkOpen[]
in mathematica 2.0 (sun 4).
Does anyone know whether and how this limit may be modified?
info at wri.com did not respond to a query on this subject.
