The Computer Algebra Netherlands Expertise Centre organises a one-day course in TM MATHEMATICA, a computer system for doing mathematics. MATHEMATICA is a trade mark of Wolfram Research Inc. The goal of the course is to attain enough experience with MATHEMATICA to ensure an efficient and self-reliant usage of the various capabilities of the system. The comprehensive course will consist of both explanatory lectures and hands-on instruction on Silicon Graphics workstations. FOR WHOM: The course is intended for people with little or no experience with MATHEMATICA. A background knowledge of mathematics at secondary school level is required. CONTENTS: Topics include 1. graphics (2 and 3-dimensional), 2. algebraic and numerical computations (integration, differentiation, solving systems of equations or ordinary differential equations), and 3. an introduction to the input/output system, the help system and the documentation. WHERE: This course will be held at the CWI, Amsterdam. WHEN: Thursday, March 26th, 1992. PRICE: The total price will be Dfl 500,- (exclusive VAT). This includes course material and lunch. REGISTRATION: The form below should be sent in before March 15. Since its introduction in 1988, its use has become quite widespread in engineering, research and education. MATHEMATICA is not only software for mathematical operations like integration, differentiation and solving equations, it is also a versatile programming language. Numerous packages have been written since its introduction. A large library with special functions and physical constants is one of its features. The graphical capabilities form an other outstanding feature. The CAN Expertise Centre CAN, the Expertise Centre for Computer Algebra in the Netherlands, stimulates and coordinates the use of computer algebra in education and research. CAN provides specialists and users with a common platform for discussing problems of mutual interest. To this end, CAN maintains hardware dedicated to computer algebra. The CAN computers can be used for production runs and experimentation, and are easily accessible through modern communication networks like SURFnet, Datanet and Internet. The staff of CAN gives advice on the use of computer algebra and software development. Furthermore, CAN serves as a distribution centre for computer algebra systems, CAN organises seminars and meetings, and it publishes regularly a newsletter. Also courses in several computer algebra systems are organised, e.g. in MAPLE and MATHEMATICA. The Instruction Team The MATHEMATICA lectures will be given by Leendert van Gastel. He has obtained a doctoral degree Mathematics in Utrecht. Later on he received a PhD in algebraic geometry. During his study he followed a didactical training. At this moment he is employed by CAN, primarily engaged in consultancy and in the development of seminars and courses. The hands-on instruction will be assisted by several CAN staff members. --------------------------------------------------------------------- REGISTRATION FORM I will attend the MATHEMATICA course on March, 26th 1992 Name: ______________________ Employed by: ______________________ Address: ______________________ Postal code: ______________________ City: ______________________ Telephone: ______________________ E-mail: ______________________ Send bill to: ______________________ ______________________ ______________________ Date: ______________________ Signature: ______________________ PLEASE SEND IN BEFORE MARCH 15 TO CAN Expertise Centre Kruislaan 413 1098 SJ Amsterdam
