As it turns out, Mma was improperly installed. After carefully deleting *ALL*
Mma files, I reinstalled it and it works fine now. Apparently Mma was unable to
find some needed files.  Of course, it would have been nice if Mma itself could
have said something to this effect. Sigh, hours wasted...
