Bytes

Dear mathgroupers,
suppose I have List containg a Integer numbers corresponding to  Bytes. How can I convert them to the symbols they represent?
This questions arises from the following problem: one person gave me a file describing a matrix where a null record of 5 Bytes
is written when no data are contained in the position analized and an Integer is written  otherwise.  I NEED TO READ Thouse
data but  I do not know how. Any help?
