MathGroupers:

Recently I have been trying to find a way to protect the
intellectual property rights of people who post useful
information or code to MathGroup. I do not want future MathGroup
postings to be used inappropriately in publications or
other places without the permission of the original
developer. Rather than append some sort of Copyright
symbol to every message, I think that it is more appropriate
for individual posters to do this if they want:

I propose that posters put a line like

Copyright (c) 1993, <their name>

at the end of the email message that they want to retain
some sort of control over. Then readers will know that if
they see the Copyright line, they should contact the
owner to get permission to use their message or
code. Surely, readers should always credit
the original poster in publications.

It is possible that no one really cares about this issue.
I hope to get a consensus to help me decide its importance.

I welcome the input of MathGroup members on this. I will
collect suggestions and then post a summary of the various opinions. I
presume there is some NET rule about this that someone can
send me.
