Exponents in notebook names

This is a very simplified example of behavior that puzzles me. Running 2.2
on a Mac Quadra I have made notebooks with names that contain the ^ symbol
for exponents. Then seemingly at random, when I make changes in the
notebooks and click on the go-away box to close the notebook I'm asked
whether I want to save the changes in the notebook. But the ^ is often
omitted from the notebook name.
Example: Make a notebook that has only the computation 2^3 in it and save it
under the name 2^3, using the go-away box. Then reopen it, make some
trivial change like adding another cell with the computation 2^4, click
go-away. You'll sometimes be asked whether you want to save the changes in
the notebook 2^3 but sometimes just in the notebook 2. I can't see a
pattern to this behavior, but it's certainlabnormal.
