MATHEMATICA IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION

I am preparing a report for a meeting in the UK this September devoted
to the use of computers in engineering education; there will be provision
for two days hands on demonstration.

I would like to be able to give a well-supported picture of the way in
which Mathematica is being used, its versatilty and its professional
relevance.

If you could spare some time to send me information that you think would
be helpful I should be very grateful. The sort of categories that I am
thinking about are indicated below, but I will be happy to receive any
information. Brief examples of the use of Mma by staff and students would
be welcome.

Manuscript deadline is 1-June-94.

INSTITUTION POLICY:

University/School adoption: what scale?

Use OF Mma for courses and projects by teacher/students (At what level? Are
notebooks from students accepted/required. Is group work accepted/required).
Use for Masters/Doctors programs and consultancy ?

Training program for general use by students/faculty, cross-institution/
in-school/open to all?

Support for program development -- time, committed faculty/assistants,
funding internal/external, assisted purchase of machines/Mma?

EQUIPMENT:

Machines - Macs/IBM/NEXTSTEP/Sun/....?

Labs, access policy?

Office machines?

Networking (downloading from office machines? communication between students
and between students and faculty? access to network and Mma away from labs?
access to Internet?)

Printing facilities?

PERSONAL USE:

Are your students using Mma independently of course requirements. Are they
purchasing their own machines and Mma?

TYPESETTING:
Wolfram Research is incorporating a full typesetting facility into Mma. How
do you see this affecting its use?

EDUCATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE

What do you see as the significant contribution of Mathematica to
engineering education?
