Spurious Times in X11 notebooks

I have been having problems with spurious Times commands in notebooks
under the X11 interface. What occasionally happens is that variables
appear in the form, Times[, u]. This seems to come about because of
the existence of invisible control characters in the text of an input
line; apparently as a artifact of the automatic indenting of lines.

Can anyone comment on this?
