Mixed fonts in graph labels

I hope this isn't an FAQ, but there was nothing relevant to the
question on the local newsgroup gated from the list.

Is it possible to mix fonts in graph labels? I'm producing graphs for
my thesis, and I would like to be able to label in both Times-Italic
and Symbol, so that I can produce labels like this:
k \sigma^2

Is there any way of doing this other than producing an EPS file and
adding labels by hand? Also, is it possible to change the font in a
subscript, so that that the `1' of `x_1' is smaller than the `x'?
