Without more detail of exactly how your computer is configured 
and other applications running it is not possible to give a 
definitive answer, but you could start by looking for conflicting 
programmes. For example there have been reports of problems 
with MS Mail and Mathematica.

You might also want to upgrade to the current version of 
Mathematica (2.2.3).
