Michael Trott (mtrott at wri.com) correctly points me out that

dropLineMT[{x_,y_}]=Line[{{x,0},{x,y}}]

is faster than the corresponding function in my posting.  The improved code
therefore should be as follows:

dropLineMT[{x_,y_}]=Line[{{x,0},{x,y}}];
DiscretePlot[args__] := Block[{$DisplayFunction = Identity},
	ListPlot[args, PlotJoined->False] /.
		Point[point_] :> {Point[point],dropLineMT[point]}
] //Show

(* example *)
DiscretePlot[Range[10]-5,PlotStyle->PointSize[.02]]

Any more improvements?
