Memory Question

How much memory does Mathematica use when it calculates the Fourier
of large 2-D arrays of numbers (upwards of 500x500)? I need to be able
to run array of this size and perhaps larger, but Mathematica
continuously shutdowns the kernet and gives me an 'Out of Memory' error.
Is it a problem with my machine or a problem with the program I am
using? Thanks in advance.

J.T. Tsai
