I thought the Mathematica users on the list might want to know about this. ------ Forwarded Article <mathematica_conference-210395144403 at mg1_95.chem.utas.edu.au> ------ From mathematica_conference at hilbert.maths.utas.edu.au --------------------------------------------------------- Conference Program, Call for Papers and Registration Form (updated 16 March 1995) MATHEMATICA in MATHEMATICS RESEARCH and EDUCATION University of Tasmania 8-10 July 1995 The Mathematica Conference will immediately follow the Annual Conference of the Australian Mathematical Society, 2-7 July 1995, also at the University of Tasmania. Up-to-date information about the Mathematica Conference may be accessed on the World Wide Web at http://euler.maths.utas.edu.au/Maths/MathematicaConference.html You'll also find a link there to a nice online tour of Tasmania. The support is acknowledged of the Australian Mathematical Society and of PICA Software as a Commercial Sponsor of the conference. CALL for PAPERS Papers for presentation at the conference should be in the form of Mathematica Notebooks. Papers may address any topic in mathematics teaching or research (and should indicate which). The Program Committee will consider papers, in complete or outline form, for inclusion in the conference program. The University of Tasmania has a Mathematica site licence, and, where appropriate, contributed Mathematica materials may be made accessible to conference participants on computers in the Mathematics and other Computing Laboratories. Papers should be submitted to the Conference Chair, preferably by email, before 1 May 1995. Email notification of acceptance of papers will be issued by 15 May 1995. Accepted papers will be published in Mathematica World. CONFERENCE PROGRAM * Day 1 Saturday 8 July 1995 Mathematica in Mathematics Research Invited presentation: Applied Mathematics and Mathematica, Terry Robb, Monash University Invited presentation: Automated Theorem Proving using Groebner bases, Tim Stokes, Murdoch University 25 minute contributed presentations Other activities Conference Banquet * Day 2 Sunday 9 July 1995 Mathematica in Mathematics Education Invited presentation: Mathematica As a Tool for Student Exploration and Discovery, Ed Packel, Lake Forest College, USA Invited presentation: Mathematica - Enhancing the teaching and application of mathematics, Stephen Hunt, Victoria University of Technology Invited presentation: Mathematica at the Tertiary-Secondary Interface - Exploring possibilites, David Leigh-Lancaster, Kingswood College 25 minute contributed presentations Other activities * Day 3 Monday 10 July 1995 Paul Abbott's Mathematica Programming Course Intensive intermediate-level Mathematica programming course, with a limit of 20 participants. Participants should be familiar with the basics of Mathematica: built-in functions, basic data-types such as lists, definition and use of simple functions. Topics covered: - Writing functions - Assignment statements - Pattern-matching - Rule-based programming - Functional programming - Importing and formatting data - Using Mathematica to solve a real-world problem - Developing a reusable package; modularity and scoping (Block and Module) INVITED PRESENTERS Paul Abbott, University of Western Australia, is a computational physicist well-known in Mathematica circles. Dr Abbott worked for Wolfram Research for two and a half years. He is a Contributing Editor of the Mathematica Journal and an Associate Editor of Mathematica World, and was an invited speaker at the Mathematica Conferences in Boston and Tokyo in 1992. He has given a number of Mathematica training courses, and in a 1994 lecture tour spoke on Mathematica at 11 Japanese Universities. Stephen Hunt, a mathematician, is the founding editor of the electronic publication Mathematica World. He has written many articles on Mathematica and through Mathematica World Interactive Mathematica Centers is seeking to aid the implementation of interactive Mathematica materials in mathematics education. You can sample Mathematica World on the web at http://www.wri.com/MW/ David Leigh-Lancaster is Head of the Mathematics Faculty at Kingswood College, Victoria. He is well known as an author of a current mainstream VCE textbook and has been VCE Examiner in the units Reasoning and Data and Mathematical Methods. His current research interests include global methods for mathematical curriculum design, development and review; extended task assessment in mathematics; and the use of technology in these areas. Kingswood College is committed to using Mathematica throughout senior schooling, in paricular to support the investigative project/problem components of the VCE courses. Ed Packel is the Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Lake Forest College, Illinois. His research interests include operator theory, social choice and game theory, information-based complexity, and use of technology in teaching mathematics, and his publications include three books: Functional Analysis: A Short Course, The Mathematics of Games and Gambling, and (with Stan Wagon) Animating Calculus: Mathematica Notebooks for the Laboratory. Terry Robb is an applied mathematician at Monash University. He is the creator of the popular package Intercall which enables users of Mathematica to transparently include calls to purpose-designed numerical packages such as IMSL and NAG in their Mathematica code. He is also the author of the Planetarium.ma Notebook (MathSource 0206-132) with which you can display star charts, compute planet positions and determine eclipses. Dr Robb is an Associate Editor of Mathematica World. Tim Stokes is a mathematician who works at Murdoch University. His research interests include Groebner base algorithms and the automatic proof of geometry theorems, in particular using Maple and Mathematica.
