Use Update[a] or Update[] to update symbol definitions. Apparently,
Mma 'saves' the value a[2] as undefined after the $Failed, thus the
odd behaviour you get. I also think that a behaviour more akin to the
usual ''evaluation cycle' should be reimplemented here !
