calling external programs from the X-Frontend?

Does anybody know a way to call an external program (e.g a shell script
or a C program) directly from the X-frontend (using UNIX OS) without
invoking the mathematica kernel and to get the data evaluated (e.g 
postscript figures) back into the frontend.
