Looking for experiences integrating Mathematica with other apps

I'm looking for anyone out there who's had experiences (good or bad)
integrating Mathematica with other applications (especially AVS).
I'd like to know how tough it is, what technique you used (MathLink
or something else), what problems you ran into, etc.  I am especially
interested in anyone who's paired up Mathematica and AVS.
