Our Technical Support department has received reports from various late
model laptop users regarding crashes that occur when the Mathematica kernel
is launching from the front end. The symptom is that the details of the
crash involves the NeoMagic display driver NMX.DRV. We don't know the full
details of whether the problem is on our side or theirs, but we _do_ know
of a workaround that helps you to avoid sacraficing your laptop altogether.

WORKAROUND: Right click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. And select
"Properties". Choose the tab that is titled "Performance". Press the
button called "graphics" that appears at the bottom of this dialog box.
Move the accelerator slider from "Full" to "None". Click "OK" buttons to
make the dialog boxes go away.

Our development group is looking into the problem.
