I have tried both native and non native versions.
MM 2.2.2 is native (but the front end is unuseable)
while the most recent version
2.2.3 is non native  ( with a little more
stable frontend). There is a clear difference in performance
(perhaps 40%). Worse all the binaries are SPARC 7 and do
not use the more recent integer instructions in the sparc 8 
machines that are now available.  Hence the medicocre performance
of MMA on sparcs.
