I was happily computing Chebyshev polynomials with Mathematica 2.2 (Enhanced
Front End) on my Apple Macintosh Powerbook 540C when, with the battery
getting low, the" time to plug in" message came on. I plugged in the
charger, and noted the battery monitor did not immediately show the
lightning bolt, although the plugged-in symbol appeared. I then instructed
Mathematica to SAVE my newly created notebook, having just got a bad feeling
about this. During the SAVE, The Front End quit, with an operating system
(7.5) message " The application "unknown" has quit because an error of Type
1 has occurred ". The Kernel was left running. After a restart, The Front
End now blows up with the same message every time I try to OPEN my Cheby
notebook. Norton Utilities can not find anything wrong with the Disk and I
can open the now fatally flawed notebook with Simple Text. I have just
driven my Cheby to the levee. Are there any other reports out there of weird
interactions between Mathematica, and the Powerbook battery management
software?
