Thr following seems to supply your desire

In[1]:=
           eqn = ans - Sqrt[a^2]==0

Out[1]= 
            -Sqrt[ a^2  ] + ans == 0

In[2]:=
           Solve[%,a]

Out[2]=
            {{a -> -ans}, {a -> ans}}
