If you run mathematica kernel 2.2.4 on a digital DECalpha, it's a
known bug. Mathematica suddenly says (something like)

  Internal error:: FreeExpression called on live expression.

and there is nothing you can do about it but retreat to release 2.2.3.
They described this "very unusual" bug on their web-site before, but
now that page has been removed. One guess is that they wish their
costomers to have fun with mathematica for a long time before they
give up. Another guess is that they think this bug shouldn't bother
anyone anymore since v. 3.0 is on its way.

Don't ask me how long it will take them to port 3.0 to DECalphas, the
notebook interface arrived (in working condition) only a few months
ago...
