 I believe the source of the problem is WriteDXF's insistence that its
second argument have a Graphics3D head and not a SurfaceGraphics head
such as that in the expression named "shape" that you created.

I think if you tried WriteDXF["knot.dxf",Graphics3D[shape]] it would
work.
