You can certainly linearize any non-linear DE by treating a variable as 
a constant, solving the remainder and iterating on the "constant" one.  
The broader response to your question, though, is that mathematica can 
certainly solve a non-linear differential equation just like c or 
fortran can.  It is a powerful programming language, not just a 
collection of nifty functions.
