MMA not printing greek

hi there
i just got mma 3.0 for students and found a problem---according to my book,
the basic input palette should give me greek characters, but it doesn't.
it looks nothing like the palette shown on pg 14 in 'mma 3.0 for students
under microsoft windows'.
instead of there is

alpha a
beta b
gamma g
delta d
and the list goes on. in the upper left part of palette, i should have a
black box raised to the white box power.

instead, what i have is an apostrophe raised to the f power.

it looks like my fonts are all screwed up. does anyone know what's going
on?
