The following command will add a line at x=4 to any graph.  I don't
know how to automatically determine the minimum and maximum value of
f[x] to set the limits, ymin and ymax

Show[Insert[Plot[f[x], x,xmin,xmax}],Line[{{4,ymin},{4,ymax}}],{1,1}]]
