There are a few cases where the AspectRatio->Automatic option
malfunctions in mathematica.  The cure is simply to set it manually.  As
a general rule, when a function gives you something unexpected, type
??function to see what all the possible options are.  That will give you
a place to start from by trying them out and seeing what they do.
