I can only address the Windows version of MMA 3.0.  If you give a cell
in a notebook the "Initialization Cell" property then save the
notebook, MMA asks if you want to autosave.  If you respond in the
affirmative, then a copy of the initialization cell is saved in the
same directory that the notebook file resides.  It is saved with the
same name as the notebook file, but with the .m file extension instead
of the .nb file extension.   Whenever you edit the initialization cell
in the notebook file, the counterpart package file is updated
automatically upon saving the notebook file.  I do not know how to
disable the autosave feature in a given notebook file once it has been
assigned the autosave property.  I hope this helped.
