Using a kernel command in a notebook: SetOptions[$FrontEnd, StartupSound -> False] Via the front end Option Inspector dialog: 1) Click on the menu sequence Edit -> Preferences... 2) Set the scope popup to "global" if it is set to something like "notebook", "selection", or "selection's style". 3) Enter the word "StartupSound" in the Lookup line. Press the Lookup button if necessary. This will expand the dialog menu to the option listing. 4) Set the StartupSound option value from True to False. -- P.J.
