Hmmm,

Maybe you could get around this problem with a direction field. I'm sure
I remember reading about a direction field package for Mathematica in
this forum some time - but I can't get through to MathSource at the
moment to check this.

If you have a height field z(x,y), and form the gradient of this, the
direction field of this would be a set of hacheurs. Possible problems
would be (1) lines might be all the same length, or (2) might be
longest at steeper gradients instead of the preferred opposite of this.

If one of these problems exists and you can get around it, this will
still not do exactly what you want. But maybe you can use this general
approach (gradient operator plus direction field) to construct the
picture you want out of graphics primitives (little straight lines).
