Hi,

Recently I ran a benchmark test 'Timing[50001!;]' on my linux box and
the result was surprisingly poor. It took almost 212 seconds to
complete the task. I tried to recompile my kernel, re-install the
Mathematica3.0, but nothing can help it. Accidentally, I was playing
around with my mouse during executing the above line. The result was
improved. So I made another try. By pressing the Shift key which has
no effect while the 'Timing[50001!;] was running, and the outcome was
59 sec! Very Strange. I turned off any power saving feature of my
laptop and those of linux itself. Still I get two different running
time. I also tried another benchmark notebook (I forget the homepage,
but with the index about 4.9 for the PII 450 system) , and had the
similar result: Without pressing key while running: it took about 516
sec(index 0.19) with a key pressing while running: it only took 176.2
sec(index 0.57) Why the Mathematica3.0 on my linux box was slowed down?
Any help will be appreciated. System Info: linux 2.0.34, P100 Laptop
with 32M RAM. Thanks for help!!
