To the best of my knowledge, it cannot be done with System 8.0. The
workaround that was provided for Mathematica 2.2.1 and earlier can be
found at URL:

One of the steps, disabling the Modern Memory Manager on the Memory
control panel, disppeared with the advent of MacOS System 7.6. So
there is no known method for running this old of a copy of Mathematica
with release of MacOS this new.

You may want to consider contacting Wolfram Research Customer Service
<orders at wolfram.com> to get information on what sorts of upgrade
options are available for your version of Mathematica. The current
shipping version, Mathematica 3.0.1, includes a PowerPC-native version.
