If you suspect that it may be a font configuration problem, there are several webpages at Wolfram Research's Technical Support website that may be worth reviewing. The relevant URL is: http://www.wolfram.com/support/FrontEnds/System/Fonts/ One other aspect you may want to check is the default input format type, which is set via the front end menu command sequence Cell -> Default Input Format Type -> <format type> If this is set to InputForm, you will not be able to enter two-dimensional typeset information. Setting the value to StandardForm will restore the ability to use two-dimensional syntax.
