Alan,

Here's one trick you can use:

newFactorInteger[n_]:=
  Times @@ MapThread[ HoldForm[#1^#2]&, Transpose[ FactorInteger[n] ] ]

The only trick is that if you want to see (or use) the evaluated form of
the output, you need to use ReleaseHold.
