After having students experience various annoying intermittent problems with printing graphics cells from Mathematica 3.0 on NeXTs to NeXT printers for more than a year now, I finally stumbed across the following bit on the support page: http://www.wolfram.com/support/FrontEnds/Printing/PSProblems.html which describes a change to the printing rendering options which appears to have fixed the problem. The symptons were that the printed cell contains all the graphics that is supposed to be there (as it appeared on the screen) but also some other garbage, which often is a translated, reflected piece of some other part of the graphics cell. The solution is to force the machine to render the cell, rather than the printer. I had a number of emails to wolfram with nobody able to answer this problem and I was very happy to find an apparent solution and thought perhaps other folks would be interested as well. By the way, I found this after poking around and finding the patch to the Appearance Extension to fix the very annoying "misplaced cursor" bug under MacOS 8, which I was very happy about.
