Try this:

z=1/(a + I b + 1/(c + I d)

this gives the real-part:

In[1]=
z1=ComplexExpand[z,TargetFunctions->{Re,Im}]//.Complex[0,_]->0
//Simplify

Out[1]=
               c + a c^2 + a d^2
-------------------------------------------------- 
1 + 2 a c - 2 b d + a^2(c^2 + d^2) + b^2(c^2 + d^2)

The imaginary part is then z-z1.
