Malte;
        This works:

MatrixForm[Outer[Times,{a,b,c},{x,y,z} ] ]

Note that Outer[Times... is just an outer product of two lists.  The concept
of column-  versus row- vectors is irrelevant, but the outer product is not
commutative.
