Is this unacceptable behavior confined to OS 8.x? To some specific Mac models? In our situation, we have a student lab with a mix of 6100's and 7600's. Mathematica -- front end and kernel -- runs on the individual machines networked to a server. But these machines are networked via AppleTalk to a Unix server where our own notebooks reside. Due to security software, it is impossible for users to temporarily disable the AppleTalk network. Right now we still have Mathematica 3.0.1 installed in that lab. If the cited problem affects our configuration, then version 4.0 will be USELESS to us!!! (And what's worse, faculty users will have upgraded to 4.0 on their own machines and quite possibly prepare notebooks containing, e.g., nested cells, that cannot be understood by the 3.0.1 front end, or give instructions such as using the real-time 3D graphics manipulation that does not exist in 3.0.1. In short, a total disaster.) "Ned W.
