I use mathlink for excel to do this somewhat successfully; not perfect for
general communications, but it works acceptably to call the kernel and put
in functions.  To the best of my knowledge, you CAN create a general link,
but it's involved.    Check out the VB sample frontend (written in VB) in
your mathmatica installation.  Pretty low-level stuff...
