Robert,

Use parentheses so that it applies the MatrixForm after the assignment rather 
than assigns the MatrixForm to the variable.

(G = {{1, 2}, {3, 4}}) // MatrixForm

(H = {{5, 6}, {7, 8}}) // MatrixForm

G.H

{{19, 22}, {43, 50}}
