Bjorn,
- Find the Default style sheet
(in my Windows system its address is
"C:\\Program Files\\Wolfram Research\\Mathematica\\4.0 \
(1)\\SystemFiles\\FrontEnd\\StyleSheets\\Default.nb" ).

-open the style sheet
- open the section "Styles for Body Text"
- open the cell expression for the cell Prototype for styles "Text"
(Control+Shift+e does it)
- On the right side of the rule InputAutoReplacements -> ... find
"mma"->"Mathematica"
- delete this

You will still have "Mma"->"Mathematica" and "MMA"->"Mathematica"

- restore the cell to its formated form ((Control+Shift+e again)

-repeat this for cells as needed.

- save the style sheet

- repeat for other style sheets as needed
