Bear in mind that in order to have an AxesLabel you must have Axes to 
start with (not to be confused with Frame). Include the option 
Axes->True. For example, try:

In[1]:=
ContourPlot[Sin[x y], {x, -5, 5}, {y, -5, 5}, Axes -> True,
    AxesLabel -> {"Axes label 1", "Axes label 2"}];
