TableForm vs. Slot

Here is some (to me) surprising output:

TableForm[{#}]   gives    StandardForm

TableForm[{#2}]    gives    {Left, Baseline}

TableForm[{#3}]   gives    DirectedInfinity[1]

Guess what happens with TableForm[{#4}], TableForm[{#5}] ...,
or with MatrixForm[{{#}}], MatrixForm[{{# + 1}}]

I wonder if there a way to show a list containing Slot
(*not* inside a Function) in a tabular format.
