Here is probably the most natural way:

In[1]:=
ls = {dog, "dog", 1, Pi}

Out[1]=
{dog, "dog", 1, Pi}

In[2]:=
Cases[ls, _String] // InputForm

Out[2]//InputForm=
{"dog"}
