Although this doesn't answer the question posed, it's one bit of information
to hopefully help the list eliminate from consideration a possible source of
the problem.

I ran the test problem uneventfully on my machine using the Mathematica front
end.

I'm running Mathematica 4.1 on Gnu/Linux, using the Gnome/Helix desktop
environment, and the RedHat 6.1 Linux distribution.
