What do you mean?? When you type in a cell, it remains visible after the
evaluation. Tweek it and press Shift+Enter to get a new result.
If you don't want to lose the original form of the command, copy+paste the
cell to get a clone, tweek and evaluate..

PS. You ARE using a front-end , right? I don't know about using the kernel
alone..
