Kai,
    I assume you are a new Mathematica user.  Therefore, I'm guessing that
the "outline" you mention is the bracket that marks the Cell into which you
are entering input.  Since Mathematica needs both a way to recognize new
lines within a cell, and a way to recognize the command to execute all the
code in a cell, you must press Shift-enter together to evaluate the cell;
Enter by itself gives you a new line.
    If I am right about your problem, you should take the time to read a
book about basic Mathematica; these are very basic issues.
